Charles Christofle was born in Paris in 1805 into a family of small manufacturers specializing in the manufacture of buttons. The only boy in a family of four, he began an apprenticeship with his brother-in-law Hughes Calmette, a copper jewelry maker, in 1821.
10 years later, he took over the management of the business and, in 1832, registered his master's mark with the Paris Guarantee for "parure". He developed his factory by focusing it on export jewelry in precious metal.
